The future of Symbian

Gizmodo shows a preview of Symbian's future interface. It looks nice, but it's not so much the looks that ruin Symbian for me. It's the functionality. Things like double-tapping and styluses remind me too much of where we once were. And it wasn't pretty. It concerns me a bit that Nokia is continuing to develop Maemo as a tablet OS, reaching for Windows for their netbooks, and reaching for Symbian on their phones. It feels like they're overdoing it a bit. I think they're afraid to lose some of their development community, and I'm not sure their concerns are really worthwhile. Leaving Symbian behind and going forward with Maemo on all devices seems like a great move. It's already got the software it really needs and a good following. Aligning on that OS as a strategy would free up a lot of resources to focus on other things.
