The other night I went and saw M. Night Shyamalan's The Village. For days I have been debating what to say, and how much to tell. And the answer is that this review will contain spoilers. I'm sorry, but I can't say nothing this time. However, for that reason I will make this an extended entry.
The directing, art, cinematography, and character development were all fantastic. I really enjoyed watching this film. The problem is that it is simply not a fantasy horror film. The more commercials come out, the more it's marketed as such. But it's not a horror film! It's drama, a little suspense. It's got a twist at the end that solidifies the plot as something that every rendition of Star Trek to date has tackled at least once.
As I see it, the commercial should start black. Words fade into focus as a deep voice repeats them. "What if you wanted to create a society away from the rest of the world? How would you do it? Where would you go? What could go wrong?" Now for the quick-paced music and some flashes of scenes from the film. Now a serene scene with trees and calm music as the title of the film comes into focus. Fin.
August 8, 2004 3:05 PMYes, perhaps. But consider what kind of an effect that would have had on your viewing of the movie? What if you had walked into the movie, knowing it was about creating a society away from the rest of the world? IMO, playing it off the way they did, as a horror film, was alright, because then the movie was a complete surprise. You had different expectations about the movie, and for that reason, the twists were exceptionally entertaining.

However, I do think that walking in expecting it to be a fantasy horror sort of ruined it for me. Perhaps playing it off as more of a period suspense film to surprise you with the twists.
